Up Close & Personal With Jason Coleman
A Tribute to our Patron

HAIRSPRAY, the smash-hit musical that has won 30 major awards worldwide is coming to Australia and will open at the Princess Theatre Melbourne in October this year!

Be swept away to 1960's Baltimore where we follow Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and big dreams as she sets out to dance her way onto TV's most popular dance show. Can this ordinary girl realise her dreams, inspire her Mum and still have time to win the boy she loves?

The Australian Dance Festival would like to express their gratitude to the producers of Hairspray for granting us permission to use music from the musical for our world record attempt.

Jason Coleman has been a fixture of the Australian Dance scene for more than twenty years.

Jason's engagement as Choreographer for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games was a career highlight - watched by over 3.8 billion people across the globe. Following this success, Jason was chosen to choreograph the highly acclaimed handover ceremony for the Commonwealth Games in Manchester.

Jason subsequently acted as Director of Choreography for the Opening and Closing of the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar. This was one of the largest and most expensive shows made anywhere on earth. As well as choreographing himself, he was also responsible for directing an international team of choreographers for this event.

Jason has worked as a choreographer, dance consultant and in a motion capture performance role in the animated film Happy Feet. In 2008 Jason joined the hit TV series So You Think You Can Dance Australia as judge and opened 'Ministry of Dance' - the largest Dance School in the Southern Hemisphere, located in Melbourne.

Fundraiser for Father Chris Riley's Youth Off The Streets

On the 4th September 2010, as part of The CLEAN&CLEAR® Australian Dance Festival, Jason Coleman led 726 dancers in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the Largest Number of People doing a song and dance.

We have now received confirmation from Guinness that we did officially break the record!!!

We would like to thank Jason Coleman for helping us with this amazing project, which also raised over $1,000 for Father Chris Riley's Youth Off The Streets.
A big thank you also goes out to all the dancers, dance schools, teachers and parents who came along to support us!

About Youth Off The Streets
Youth Off The Streets is a community organisation working for young people who are chronically homeless, drug dependent and recovering from abuse. The chairty supports these young people as they work to turn their lives around and overcome immense personal traumas such as neglect and physical, psychological and emotional abuse.
Since opening in 1991, Youth Off The Streets has grown from a single foodvan delivering meals to young homeless people on the streets of Kings Cross to a major youth specific agency providing a wide range of services offering a full continuum of care.

They provide crisis care for young people still living on the streets with their food van, youth refuge and outreach programs. They also operate an innovative drug and alcohol program specifically designed for young people. Their accredited independent high schools in Surry Hills, the Southern Highlands and Merrylands, provide flexible educational opportunities and support for young people living on the streets or who are unable to attend mainstream high schools. Many of these young people go on to successfully achieve their School Certificate and, in increasing numbers, their Higher School Certificate.

ADF Breaks the Guinness World Record!
On September 4th, 2010, The Australian Dance Festival broke the World Record for the Largest Song & Dance Routine! (Officially recognised the Guinness World Records!)

As Jason Coleman is the Patron of the  Australian Dance Festival, and also choreographer for the "Hairspray, The Musical", it was only fitting that the world record should be "The World's Largest Number of Dancers Doing a Hairspray Choreography", led by Jason Coleman himself!  >>learn more
