Who is Treasure Bound Books?

Our mission

“For kids to enjoy reading, it has to have a pay off, whether it’s finding out what happens in The Phantom Tollbooth or getting the joke in MAD magazine or a Roald Dahl novel”

Jon Scieska, USA’s first “ambassador for young people’s literature” appointed by Library of Congress and the Children’s Book Council.  USA Today, Feb 11, 2008

Who is Treasure Bound Books – and what are these book-games?

Treasure Bound Books is a publishing company established to produce an exciting new format in children’s books that will take the market by storm.

This patented new format combines the magic of stories with the fun of toys in an interactive book that kids love playing with.

The patent is for compartments of any shape, function, number or placement on a book. The compartments can be filled with anything – toys, stickers, puzzles, coins, treats, you name it!

Our first book is a treasure hunt adventure story with eight mini treasure chests holding toys that are clues to finding the gold.  See About the book

Our vision is a series of these books – fiction and educational – that kids love playing with.

We dream of books where:

-  Pyramids are the compartments; Egyptian treasures are the toys
-  Eggs are the compartments; dinosaurs are the toys
-  Sharks jaws are the compartments; sea creatures are the toys
-  Castles are the compartments; princesses are the toys
-  Phonebooths are the compartments; superheroes are the toys
-  Churches are the compartments; religious characters are the toys

The possibilities are endless and licenses for the format are available for publishers to produce their own books.

Our mission

While our vision is for kids all over the world to have fun playing with these books, our mission is even bigger and more urgent.

Like so many inventions, this new type of book was created by a mom who had a problem and wanted to do something to solve it for her kids!

" What kept me up at night was the worry my kids were getting behind in school because they wouldn’t read.  The idea for a new way to interact with books came to me in a dream.  It was later that day while walking to literacy tutoring and seeing my kids running up - yet again - to the vending machine of tiny toys that it hit me that toys would be the perfect thing to keep kids turning the pages! "

Karen Robertson, inventor and author of Treasure Kai and the Lost Gold of Shark Island

We’ve worked with literacy professionals to make the language in Treasure Kai simple – so it can be enjoyed by kids who read well and those who struggle.

We are passionate about helping parents understand the impact of poor literacy on self esteem and behaviour. We’ve seen firsthand what can happen when a beautiful, sensitive and intelligent child struggles with literacy and it’s not picked up or addressed.   We want to help educate parents about how to identify possible literacy or learning challenges and what their options are from there.

We are intensely grateful to the remedial literacy tutor and speech pathologists who have worked with our sons to help them with literacy. We want to give back by making sure that other parents know what to do and what resources are available to them in Australia and the US.

The sooner literacy challenges are picked up, the less impact there will be on a child’s self esteem.

Our dream is that any child with literacy challenges can get the remedial help he needs. This takes money - scholarships for children and training of tutors.  So a percentage of the profits of these books will be invested towards this goal.
